Sophie Agnes Kocich

Sophie Schwartz Kocich 1893-1987

Sophie Schwartz is the first child of Joseph and Sophie Schwartz.

When Sophie was 23, she married Louis Kocich on October 30, 1916,  at Ascension Church in Moravia, Texas.  They had a very big wedding and a dance at night. In those days, weddings were held only in the fall of the year, after harvest was done and everyone had some free time.

The first place they lived was on the farm of Louis' father, Frank Kocich.  After living there for five to six years, they bought the Ermis place at $75 an acre for 68 acres. A few years later they bought 80 acres from Anton Tobola for $35 an acre.  Papa Joseph and Joe Krause helped build our house on the Ermis place, framing the house on ground, then raising all four two-by-four walls at once and nailing them together.

Our Home

In 1966, Louis and Sophie were married 50 years. In 1971, they sold their farm to their son, Marvin, but kept the house and three acres. Louis and Sophie lived all their lives on the farm.  Sophie loved people, singing, dancing, and visiting.  She spoke German, Czech, and English and had many friends.  She was a very sensitive, soft-hearted woman, always looking out for other’s needs, whether it was food for an empty stomach, nursing for a sick body, a place to lay your head or caring for little ones.  Louis died in this home on his favorite bed on November 28, 1981, at the age of 86. Sophie died six years later on December 22, 1987, at the age of 94.
