Pam S Backlund - Author

About the author

I am a retired high school science teacher living in San Angelo Texas. I love writing and illustrating short stories...especially about my hometown and its vicinity. I like the decade of the 1880s, so most of my stories occur at that time.

Climbing Devil’s Courthouse Mountain—once called Sugar Loaf Mountain—is on my bucket list. Read the story, "1889 Balloon Journey," to visualize where it is.

When not writing, I enjoy with my husband, visiting our sons and their families, gardening and cooking for gatherings.

Author -Books/Videos for the heart of the Concho Valley...Education about intermittent rivers in a mixed grass prairie biome.  More specifically, the Concho River system surrounding San Angelo, Texas.

Concho Diamonds

by Pam S Backlund "Concho Diamonds" is a collection of 44 fictional short stories set in the Concho Valley of West Texas in the late 1800s. The stories explore the lives of diverse characters, including Black, Hispanic, Chinese, Tonkawa Native Americans, and Anglo settlers. Each narrative delves into personal struggles, resilience, and the rich tapestry of frontier life, with themes of humor, survival, and hope amidst historical challenges. From soldiers and pioneers to families and drifters, these characters reflect the harsh yet vibrant world of West Texas, their lives shaped like diamonds under the pressures of time and circumstance.

Dear God, They're Pressing On

by Pam S Backlund et al.

During the summer of 1915, a large family in East Texas experiences pain and pleasure with their guardian angels watching nearby. The family farm and molasses business require a lot of time and risks. But through it all, the God-fearing parents, Joseph and Sophie Schwartz instill in their fourteen children high moral values. This respectability can still be witnessed in the descendants of the fourteen children.

She Spoke of Her River by Pam Backlund

This is a story about the Concho River. It's a fictional story about a real river in Texas.  In Texas, the city of San Angelo exists. The city has a Museum of Fine Arts.  The museum is near the Concho River where a mermaid statue sits.  Once a year, Monarch butterflies migrate through the city in massive flocks. Their journey ends in Mexico, where they overwinter.  The following story is...of course, fiction.  Because migrating butterflies can't connect a mermaid statue with two innocent kids.

Texas Short Shorts: A book of short poems and beautiful images. Bruce has been living in Texas since arriving in sixth grade. Texas Short Shorts is an extraordinary compilation of Japanese Haiku style poems about his Texan observations. Bruce Backlund takes the reader on a journey through the Concho Valley, far West Texas, and the Hill Country. He transports the reader through his travels and understanding of nature. His reflections are a breath of fresh air that will amuse the reader occasionally. His wife found royalty free images to help the reader envision his thoughts. The collection of poetry and photos is uplifting!
