Our History

The Chicken Farm opened our doors in 1971 when the late Roger Allen quit his job as the Central High School art teacher and partnered with a couple buddies to make an artist dream a reality! Roger Allen, Bill Rich, and Richard Ramirez bought a vacant set of buildings - formerly a 1940's chicken farm - and slowly converted it into studios and apartments where artists could live in community and build off the "Art Spirit".  It essentially created an artist incubator program as many up and coming artists have 'flown the coop' to become well known artists such as Rene Alvarado, Mejo Okon and more. In November of 1999 Jerry & Susan Warnell purchased the back half of The Chicken Farm Art Center and started making their mark on the property as well. They converted the grain silo building into the Silo House Restaurant and a building of coops into bed and breakfast rooms. The restaurant, with new chefs, is still open for a  5-course meal Thursday - Saturday evenings and Saturday's for brunch.
