Joe R. Schwartz, was the 6th child born (June 17, 1899) to Joseph and Sophie Schwartz on the Frank Matula place south of Moravia, Texas. Joe studied in high school and university to become a teacher. He began teaching on September 18, 1922 in Velehrad, and continued until May of 1959--a total of 36 years as a teacher in the educational field.
Joe met Albina Janicek in the schoolroom at Velehrad in September, 1927. She was only an assistant teacher and close friend to Joe until 1929. In 1935, one night as they were coming home from Shiner after seeing a Will Rogers movie, they decided they really belonged to each other and made plans to be married in September, 1935, just a week before school started.
After Joe and Albina married, they continued teaching together at Velehrad until 1947. They lived in the Velehrad community in this white framed house. Two daughter were born there, Anna Marie in 1936, and May Ann in 1939. At that time Joe was drafted to the Schulenburg Public School, moved to Schulenburg, where he taught for 12 more years until he retired from teaching in 1959. In 1967, Joe was called back by the Schulenburg school system to teach a German course for one year.
