Ottilie Isabelle Bucek 1897-2000

Ottilie Isabelle (Schwartz) Bucek is the third child of Joseph and Sophie (Loika) Schwartz to live past infancy. She was born on December 14, 1897, on the homestead near Moravia.

During her school days at Moravia, Ottilie walked about 2 miles each day. A school friend, Roy Bucek, had about 3 miles to go, so he rode a horse named “Gray” and left it tied to a tree while he was in school.

“Coming home, I would walk beside him until we got to our gate. I never thought that someday Roy would be my husband. I went to school through the fourth grade and then stayed home to help my parents raise the other children and harvest the crops,

Home of Ottilie - Freyburg, TX

Ottilie and Roy married on July 24, 1916, bought his father's farm located near Velehrad, after eight years they sold it and moved to Freyburg, Texas, in 1924. They bought 168 acres at $113 an acre from Paul Grasshoff on the Salem Freyburg Road. They farmed for 40 long years, raising cotton, corn, sorghum cane for molasses, Hegira for feed, sweet potatoes, watermelons and popcorn to eat. (Roy Jr. bought the Freyburg home place in 1977 and it is now owned by his family of Bucek Family Farms: Barbara Mollenberndt and family).

Schulenburg home of Ottilie

In January 1965, Roy and Ottilie retired from farming and moved into their newly built brick home in Schulenburg. This home was on 1117 Baumgarten St. The house burned down in 2014.
